"How are you?"
"I'm fine," I replied, noting the crease in his forehead.
"You don't seem fine to me."
"What would you know, Johnny? Like 14 years of friendship is enough to know... you don't know me," I quipped, rolling my eyes at him.
He chuckled.
"I'm just checking up on you. You know that's my job. I'm..."
"My best friend... Right, I know, I know. You'd think after all these years you'd
stop worrying and acting like my father."
He playfully poked my side, causing me to jump a bit.
"Okay, alright. I'm fine. Life just sucks a bit lately. Whose doesn't, anyway?"
Johnny's brows furrowed.
Despite his demeanor, he's incredibly intelligent. Always nonchalant, he's actually very observant and sensitive. Ranking among the best in our class, he avoids competing with others, attracting unsolicited attention from jealous guys and enamored girls alike.
He and I are practically family. I know his every facial expression and what makes him tick. I try not to tick him off too much because I've scored a lot of points in pissing him off.
Although not artistically inclined, he excels as a musician and writer. His words are captivating, compensating for his lack of expressiveness.

Contrary to being a writer, he barely talks to people. Surprisingly charming when he wants to be, he mostly keeps to himself.
We can talk to each other for days. His theories and ideas are endless and sometimes overwhelming, but there's never a dull moment with him. I'm like this lump of potato, and he's a shining unicorn. (He'd probably find it hilarious if he knew that's what I thought of him.)
It's also no surprise that people always think we are going out. By now, he and I are so used to that that sometimes, we call each other "babe," "darling," "dear," and all sorts of endearments for fun..
I never really thought of him that way. But I also think that's why I rarely consider anyone else in the relationship sector. I didn't feel the need for it. Johnny says one day we're both gonna have to, and that it's unhealthy for us to cling to each other. And yet he clings to me all the same.
Well, I guess we're just gonna have to find a way to work around that.
